Birth Control

"Birth" is the act of being born, of coming into this world from the warm protection of the mother's womb.

"Control" is "to exercise restraint or direction over; dominate; command." (dictionary.com)

Over and over again the Bible shows that only God controls birth. God enabled Rebekah to conceive (Gen. 25:21) and opened Leah's womb (Gen. 29:31). He also directed miraculous births for Sarah, Elizabeth, and Mary. God closed the wombs of the women in Abimilech's household (Gen. 20:18) and of Mical, David's wife (2 Samuel 6:23).

So... why do so many women think they can control it? Why do we try to tell God that we want 2.5 children?

Is He not sovereign? Does He not know us and love us completely?

Why can't we just leave it up to Him?

Even the number of children we have?

I'd love to hear your thoughts.

  1. I tend to agree with you, yet we have chosen to stop after 3 children. With my 2nd and 3rd pregancies, I ended up in Cardiac ICU. It's a scary, scary thing to have your life on the line with a 26 week baby in your belly!

We thought it might just be a one-time thing during the second pregnancy, but when it happened again in the third pregnancy (and continued to occur for a time after the baby's birth), we chose to say that our family is complete.

We haven't - and won't - do anything that is irreversible or difficult/costly to reverse - but we do feel it's best for our three children to have a mother who is healthy & there for them.

    1. Dawn,

I also believe that every family needs to make their own decisions for themselves about birth control. I haven't been in your shoes, but I don't think I'd "try" for another after one or more challenging pregnancies/deliveries.

I just hate how so many people try to plan their lives out, including "perfect number" of children.

Decisions about number of children should be approached with much prayer, patience, and wisdom. It's not something we should decide on based on our whims. :)
